Chromebooks are simple, quick and hard to break in software, which is why so many families, schools and small businesses around the South Hams use them. They are also carried everywhere, dropped in school bags and left on the sofa arm, so screens, keyboards, hinges and charging ports take a beating.

Many Chromebooks are inexpensive, so the honest question comes first: is the repair worth it? We check the model, its update end date and the fault, then tell you plainly whether to fix it, and if not, what to do instead.

Chromebook faults we repair

Cracked or dark screens

The most common job. Basic 11.6-inch school Chromebooks often have a simple panel that is quick to replace. Touchscreen and convertible models such as the Acer Chromebook Spin, HP Chromebook x360, ASUS Chromebook Flip and Lenovo Flex have the glass and display bonded together, which costs more. We match the exact panel for your model.

Keyboards and missing keys

Keys prised off by little fingers, sticky keys after a drink, and keyboards that stop responding. On many Chromebooks the keyboard is riveted into the top case along with the palm rest, so we replace them together.

Charging and batteries

Most current Chromebooks charge by USB-C, and a worn port or a cheap cable can stop them charging. On many models the port is on a small separate board, which keeps the repair down. Batteries wear out after a few years of daily use and can be replaced.

Hinges and cases

Broken hinges and cracked lids from being opened by one corner. Convertibles that fold all the way round put extra strain on the hinges.

Liquid damage

Switch it off by holding the power button, unplug it and turn it upside down to drain. Do not switch it back on to test it. The sooner we can open and clean it, the better the chances.

Detachable Chromebooks

Tablet-style models such as the Lenovo Duet have a glued screen and a keyboard that clips on. Screen repairs are more involved, and the keyboard cover can often be replaced on its own.

Check the update date before repairing

Every Chromebook has an end date for automatic updates. After that it keeps working, but it stops getting security fixes and new features, and some websites and apps stop supporting it. Newer Chromebooks get updates for ten years from when the model was released; older ones had less.

To check yours, open Settings, About ChromeOS, Additional details, and look at the update schedule. If the date has passed or is close, a big repair is usually not worth it, and we will say so. An older Chromebook can still be useful for simple jobs offline, or be wiped and recycled securely.

Talk to the team

Tell us the model and what it is doing. We will say honestly what is likely to be involved and the quickest safe way to help.

How a Chromebook repair works with us

1. Tell us the model and the problem

Call 01548 600127 or send a message. The model is on a sticker underneath. If it still turns on, Settings, About ChromeOS shows it too.

2. Diagnosis and an honest answer

We check the fault and the update end date, explain the options and agree the outcome and the price with you before any work starts.

3. Repair, test and hand back

We fit the part, check charging, the screen, keyboard, touchpad, WiFi, camera and speakers, and make sure it signs in and updates.

Your data on a Chromebook

Most of what you do on a Chromebook is saved in your Google Account, so a repair rarely puts it at risk. The exception is the Downloads folder, which is stored only on the Chromebook. If anything important is in there, copy it to Google Drive or a USB stick before you bring it in, or tell us and we will help.

We never need your Google password. If we need to test signing in, we use a guest session or do it with you.

Turnaround

Common screens, keyboards and charging boards can often be sourced quickly; less common models sometimes take a few working days to arrive, and we tell you before you agree. Software problems such as a recovery or Powerwash are often sorted the same day.

Why a local Chromebook repairer helps

  • You can hand it to a person, rather than posting it off and hoping.
  • We tell you when a repair is not worth it, so you do not spend money on a Chromebook that has stopped getting updates.
  • We can help with the Google Account, WiFi, printers and parental controls that go with it.
  • If several Chromebooks need looking at, for a family, a club or a business, we can handle them together.

Chromebook repair: your questions

Which Chromebooks do you repair?+

Acer, ASUS, HP, Lenovo, Samsung and Dell Chromebooks, including convertibles, detachables and Chromebook Plus models. Tell us the model and we will say what is likely to be involved.

Is it worth repairing a Chromebook?+

It depends on the model, the fault and how long the Chromebook will keep getting updates. A keyboard or screen on a recent model usually is; on one near its update end date it often is not, and we say so.

Will I lose my files?+

Files in Google Drive, Gmail and Photos are safe in your Google Account. Files in the Downloads folder are only on the Chromebook, so copy them off first if you can.

My Chromebook will not charge. What should I check?+

Try a different USB-C charger and cable that you know work, and the other USB-C port if it has one. If it still will not charge, the port, battery or board may be at fault, and we can test it.

Can you repair a school Chromebook?+

If the school owns it, speak to the school first, because they may have their own repair or insurance arrangements. If you bought it yourself, we can repair it.
