A Chromebook is often the first computer a child has, the one the school sends home, or the cheap, reliable machine a small business buys for staff who mainly need email and the web. Each of those comes with its own questions, and the answers are not always obvious.

Families: setting up a child's Chromebook

Google's Family Link lets you give a child their own Google Account and manage it from your phone: approving apps, setting screen-time limits and bedtimes, filtering websites and seeing where time goes. It works best when set up from the start, before the child signs in.

We can set it up with you, explain the settings in plain English and make sure it covers YouTube, the Play Store and the web browser. We also help with the family WiFi, so filtering and bedtimes work across every device in the house.

School Chromebooks

  • If the school owns the Chromebook, report a fault or damage to the school first. Many schools have their own repair, insurance or loan arrangements, and opening the device yourself could cause problems.
  • School Chromebooks are managed by the school, so you cannot remove their restrictions or sign in with a personal account. That is normal and deliberate.
  • If you bought the Chromebook yourself through a school scheme, check what cover came with it. If none, we can repair it.
  • When a child leaves the school, the school releases the device if it is passing to you; until then it stays managed.

Buying a Chromebook that will last

  • Check the automatic update end date before you buy. Aim for several years remaining.
  • 8GB of memory makes a real difference if you keep lots of tabs open; 4GB is fine only for light use.
  • Chromebook Plus models have better processors, screens and cameras.
  • A sturdy hinge, a good keyboard and USB-C charging on both sides help a Chromebook survive family life.
  • For a child, a rugged education model often outlasts a thin consumer one.

Chromebooks for small businesses and clubs

For staff who live in email, a browser and Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 online, Chromebooks are quick, secure and cheap to look after. Shops, cafés, holiday-let businesses and clubs around Kingsbridge, Salcombe and Dartmouth use them for bookings, rotas and front-of-house.

With a Chrome Enterprise or Education licence, Chromebooks can be managed centrally: settings and WiFi pushed out, devices locked if they go missing, and kiosk or guest modes for shared screens. We can set this up, enrol your devices and look after them alongside your email, WiFi and backups.

Chromebooks for families, schools and businesses: your questions

Can you set up parental controls on a Chromebook?+

Yes. We set up Google Family Link with you, explain each setting and make sure it covers apps, YouTube and the web.

My child's school Chromebook is broken. Can you fix it?+

Speak to the school first if they own it. If you bought it yourself, we can repair it.

Are Chromebooks good for a small business?+

For staff who mainly use email, a browser and cloud apps, yes. They start quickly, update themselves and are hard to infect. They are not right if you rely on Windows-only software.

Can Chromebooks use Microsoft 365?+

Yes, through the web versions of Outlook, Word, Excel and Teams. They work well for most everyday tasks.

Do you supply Chromebooks?+

We can help you choose and source a suitable model and set it up. Ask us, and see the laptops in our shop.
