Most computers in the South Hams run Windows, and they come in every shape: a family Dell on the kitchen table, an HP all-in-one in a farm office, a ThinkPad in a solicitor's bag, a gaming tower in a teenager's bedroom. They fail in different ways, and the right repair depends on the make, the model and how old it is. So we start by finding out exactly what is wrong, then tell you whether it is worth fixing.
We are an independent local repairer. That means we work on all the main brands, including older machines the manufacturer no longer supports, and we can give you a straight answer if a repair would cost more than the computer is worth. If your machine is still under the maker's warranty and the fault is covered, we will tell you, because that route may cost you nothing.

What we help with on Windows computers
Laptop hardware
Cracked and flickering screens, batteries that swell or die by lunchtime, keyboards with dead keys, broken hinges, loose charging ports and laptops that have had a cup of tea over them. Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, ASUS, MSI, Samsung, Toshiba and Microsoft Surface.
Desktops, all-in-ones and gaming PCs
Towers and mini PCs that will not power on, restart on their own, overheat or make a noise like a hairdryer. Graphics card faults, failing power supplies, memory errors and upgrades, plus custom builds planned around what you actually do.
Windows itself
Slow start-ups, updates that fail or loop, blue screens, Windows 10 machines that need a plan now that support has ended, and Windows 11 upgrades done properly with your files and programs carried across.
Data and security
Getting photos and documents off a drive that has failed, getting past a BitLocker recovery screen with your recovery key, and cleaning up after scam pop-ups, fake Microsoft support calls and infections.
How a Windows repair works with us
1. Tell us the make, the model and what is happening
Call 01548 600127 or send a message. The model is usually on a sticker underneath a laptop or on the back of a desktop. If the computer still starts, Settings, System, About shows it too. A photo of any error message helps.
2. Choose how we get to it
Many software problems can be sorted over a secure remote session that you start yourself (remote sessions start with a £25 deposit). For hardware faults, drop the machine at our workshop at Springfield Farm Shop by arrangement, or ask about collection or an on-site visit around the South Hams.
3. Diagnosis before decisions
We find the fault and explain it simply, with the options and our honest recommendation. Every job is different, so we agree the outcome and the price with you before any work starts.
4. Repair, test and hand back
We carry out the agreed work, test the things that matter on that machine (charging, screen, keyboard, WiFi, webcam, speakers, temperatures under load) and tell you what was done and which parts were used.
Talk to the team
Tell us the model and what it is doing. We will say honestly what is likely to be involved and the quickest safe way to help.
Your files and accounts come first
Before anything that touches the drive, we talk about backups, and where it is practical we copy your files first. We never ask for your email or bank passwords. If we need to sign in to Windows to test the repair, we do it with you, or ask you to set a temporary password that you change afterwards.
Many newer Windows laptops encrypt their drive with BitLocker without the owner ever switching it on. That protects you if the laptop is stolen, but a board repair or firmware update can bring up a blue screen asking for a recovery key. If you use a Microsoft account, the key is usually saved there. We help you find it before work starts, so you are not locked out of your own files afterwards.

Turnaround: honest rather than optimistic
Software clean-ups, Windows repairs and many upgrades can be done quickly, sometimes the same day. Screens, batteries, keyboards and hinges are specific to each model and sometimes have to be ordered in, which we tell you before you agree to anything. On many jobs we can lend you equipment so you can keep working in the meantime.
Repair, upgrade or replace?
A good repair is one that makes sense. An SSD and a little more memory can give a five-year-old laptop several more useful years, and a new battery or keyboard is often far cheaper than a new machine. But a cracked screen on a budget laptop with a slow processor and no Windows 11 support may not be worth fixing, and we will say so.
If replacing is the better answer, we can help you choose something that suits how you use it, move your files and email across, and wipe and recycle the old machine securely.
Why a local Windows repairer helps
- You can hand your computer to a person and talk it through, rather than posting it away and waiting.
- We know the local problems: sea air and condensation in Salcombe and Dartmouth holiday lets, dusty farm offices, patchy broadband in the villages and power cuts that corrupt updates.
- We also look after networks, Microsoft 365 and cyber security, so we notice when a 'broken' PC is really a WiFi, account or security problem.
- Businesses get the same team for repairs, new machines, backups and support, rather than a different supplier for each.

Windows repair: your questions
Which Windows brands do you repair?+
Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, ASUS, MSI, Samsung, Toshiba and Dynabook, Microsoft Surface and custom-built PCs. Tell us the model when you get in touch and we will say what is likely to be involved.
Is it worth repairing an older Windows laptop?+
Often, yes. A new battery, keyboard or SSD can keep a solid laptop going for years. If the repair would cost more than the machine is worth, or it cannot run Windows 11, we tell you plainly and talk through the alternatives.
My laptop is still under warranty. Should I come to you?+
If the fault is covered by the manufacturer's warranty, use that first. Opening the machine ourselves could affect the cover. We are happy to check whether the fault is likely to be covered.
Do you need my Windows password?+
Only if a test needs us to sign in, and then we would rather do it with you there or have you set a temporary password. We never ask for your email or banking passwords.
Can you fix it remotely?+
Many software problems, yes, over a secure session that you start. Remote sessions start with a £25 deposit. Hardware faults need the machine in front of us.
Do you repair Windows PCs for businesses?+
Yes. We repair, replace and set up machines for shops, offices, trades and holiday-let businesses across the South Hams, and can look after them alongside your email, backups and WiFi.
