Fire tablets are in a lot of South Hams homes, usually in a chunky children's case. They are inexpensive, which is their strength, but it also means a repair can cost close to a new one, especially when Amazon has them on offer. So we start with the honest question, and only repair when it makes sense.
Check Amazon's cover first on Kids editions
Fire Kids and Kids Pro editions come with Amazon's own two-year promise to replace the tablet if it breaks, even from accidental damage. If yours is a Kids edition and still within that period, contact Amazon before paying for a repair. We are happy to help you check.
Common Fire tablet faults
Cracked screens
On most Fire tablets the glass and display are bonded, so the whole screen is replaced. Parts are available for the popular Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 10, and we tell you if your model's screen would cost more than it is worth.
Not charging
Recent models charge by USB-C; older ones use micro-USB, which wears out quickly when children pull the cable at an angle. Often the port is simply full of fluff and a careful clean fixes it.
Slow and full
Basic Fire tablets have little storage and fill up with apps, downloads and videos, which slows them to a crawl. Clearing space, moving videos to a microSD card and removing unused apps often makes a big difference.
Batteries
After a few years the battery may not last a car journey. Batteries are glued in but can be replaced on many models.

Fire OS, apps and Google Play
Fire tablets run Fire OS, Amazon's version of Android, with the Amazon Appstore rather than Google Play. That means some apps, including some school and Google apps, are not available. You will find guides online to add Google Play, but it is not supported by Amazon and can cause problems, so we explain the trade-off before doing anything. If you need Google apps, a Samsung or Lenovo tablet may suit you better.
Parental controls with Amazon Kids
Amazon Kids profiles let you set daily time limits, bedtimes, age filters and which apps and books a child can use, managed from the Amazon Parent Dashboard. We can set them up with you and make sure they work alongside the WiFi at home.

Amazon Fire tablet repair: your questions
Is it worth repairing a Fire tablet?+
Sometimes. A port clean, a battery or a Fire HD 10 screen can be worthwhile. On a Fire 7 or an old Fire HD 8, a new tablet is often better value, and we say so.
My child's Fire Kids tablet is broken. What should I do first?+
Check Amazon's two-year replacement promise for Kids editions. If it applies, Amazon may replace it. If not, we can look at a repair.
Can you put Google Play on a Fire tablet?+
It is possible but not supported by Amazon and can cause problems with updates and apps. We explain the risks first; for Google apps, another tablet is often the better choice.
Why is my Fire tablet so slow?+
Usually the storage is nearly full. Clearing downloads, moving videos to a microSD card and removing unused apps often helps a lot.
