Windows laptops look alike from the outside, but inside they are very different. The same brand can use a dozen screen panels, keyboards that clip in or keyboards riveted to the case, and batteries that unscrew or are glued down. Getting the repair right starts with the exact model and, for screens, the panel part number.
This page goes brand by brand through the faults we see most, then explains each repair. For a general overview of laptop repair with us, see our laptop repair page.
Common faults by brand
Dell: Inspiron, XPS, Latitude and Vostro
Inspiron laptops often come in with broken hinge mounts, where the plastic posts inside the lid or base crack and the screen starts to lift away. XPS models are slim and well built, but swollen batteries can push the trackpad up and memory is soldered on many models, so upgrades are limited. Latitude and Vostro business laptops are designed to be serviced, so batteries, drives and keyboards are usually straightforward.
HP: Pavilion, Envy, Spectre, ProBook and EliteBook
Pavilion and Envy laptops, especially the 360-degree x360 models, are prone to hinge damage that can crack the screen surround and pull on the display cable. Swollen batteries are common on older Envy and Spectre models. ProBook and EliteBook business laptops are built for repair and usually accept SSD and memory upgrades.
Lenovo: IdeaPad, Yoga, ThinkPad and ThinkBook
IdeaPad hinges and charging ports take the most wear. Yoga 2-in-1s add a touchscreen, so a cracked screen means replacing the glass and display together. ThinkPads are some of the most repairable laptops made: keyboards, batteries and drives can usually be replaced individually, which keeps the cost down.
Acer: Aspire, Swift and Nitro
Budget Aspire models sometimes have small, soldered storage that cannot be upgraded, which matters when Windows updates fill it up. Swift ultrabooks are thin, with soldered memory. Nitro gaming laptops run hot and benefit from a clean and fresh thermal paste.
ASUS: VivoBook, ZenBook, TUF and ROG
On many VivoBook and ZenBook models the keyboard is riveted to the top case, so a keyboard repair means replacing that whole panel. TUF and ROG gaming laptops see fan, overheating and charging faults. ASUS often solders some or all of the memory, so we check what can be upgraded before suggesting it.
MSI, Samsung, Toshiba and Dynabook
We also repair MSI gaming laptops, Samsung Galaxy Book models and Toshiba or Dynabook laptops, which are still common in local homes and offices.
Laptop repairs we carry out
Cracked, flickering or dark screens
We match the panel by part number: size, resolution, touch or non-touch, matte or gloss, refresh rate and connector. A screen that flickers when you move the lid can be a cable or hinge problem rather than the panel, so we check that first.
Batteries, including swollen ones
If the trackpad is lifting, the case is bulging or the laptop rocks on a flat table, the battery may be swelling. Stop using it, do not charge it, and bring it in. Swollen lithium batteries can be a fire risk, and we replace them and dispose of the old one safely.
Keyboards and trackpads
Dead keys, sticky keys and keys that type twice. Some keyboards clip out in minutes; others are part of the top case. We tell you which yours is before you decide.
Hinges and cases
A stiff or broken hinge gets worse every time the lid moves and can crack the screen. Repair usually means new hinges and, where the mounts have broken away, repairing or replacing the lid or base.
Charging and power
Laptops that only charge at an angle, or will not charge at all. We test with a known good charger first. Some charging ports are on a small separate board that is easy to replace; others are soldered to the main board. USB-C laptops can also be let down by a cheap charger that cannot supply enough power.
Liquid damage
Switch it off, unplug it, and do not turn it back on to check. Do not use rice or a hairdryer. The sooner we can open it, clean off the residue and check the board, the better the chances, and we try to get your files off first.
SSD and memory upgrades
Swapping an old hard drive for an SSD is the biggest speed boost most laptops can get. We clone your existing drive so everything is as you left it, only faster.

What the visit looks like
Bring the laptop and its charger to our workshop at Springfield Farm Shop, East Charleton, by arrangement. We look at it with you, note any existing marks or damage, and talk about your files. Once we have diagnosed it, we explain what we found and agree the outcome and the price before work starts. When it is ready, we show you the repair and make sure it charges and connects before you leave.
Turnaround
Batteries, SSDs and memory for common models can often be fitted quickly. Screens, keyboards and hinges are specific to the model and sometimes need ordering, typically arriving within a few working days, and we tell you the expected wait before you agree. Liquid damage takes longer because the board needs cleaning and drying properly.
Laptops for local businesses
For offices, shops and trades with several laptops, we can keep a record of models and warranty dates, fix faults quickly, and set up replacements so staff are not left without a machine. Business laptops such as ThinkPad, Latitude and EliteBook are worth considering when you next buy, because they are easier and cheaper to repair.

Dell, HP and Lenovo laptop repair: your questions
Can you replace a laptop screen on any model?+
Most, yes. We match the panel by part number. Touchscreens on 2-in-1 laptops cost more because the glass and display are replaced together, and we tell you before work starts.
My laptop battery is swelling. What should I do?+
Stop using and charging it, keep it on a hard surface away from anything that could burn, and get in touch. Do not press on the bulge or try to remove a glued battery yourself.
Can one key be replaced on its own?+
Sometimes, if it is just the keycap or clip. If the key does not register at all, the keyboard usually needs replacing. On some models that includes the top case.
Do you use genuine parts?+
We tell you what part we would use before work starts. Genuine manufacturer parts are available for many business laptops; for others we use good-quality compatible parts and say so.
Will I lose my files?+
Most hardware repairs do not touch your files. Where there is any risk, or after liquid damage, we talk about backing them up first.
