Windows 11 upgrades and slow PC help in Kingsbridge

Windows 10 support has ended. We check whether your PC can run Windows 11, upgrade it with your files and programs intact, and make slow computers quick again.

Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025. Windows 10 PCs still work, but without security updates they become easier targets for scams and malware. Home PCs enrolled in Microsoft's Extended Security Updates programme keep receiving critical security fixes until 12 October 2027, which gives you time, not a permanent answer.

Many people are told they need a new computer when they do not. Plenty of machines can run Windows 11 as they are, some need a setting switched on, and many slow PCs need an SSD rather than a replacement. We check yours and give you the honest options.

Can my PC run Windows 11?

Microsoft's main requirements are a supported processor (generally Intel 8th generation or AMD Ryzen 2000 series and newer), TPM 2.0 security, UEFI with Secure Boot, at least 4GB of memory and 64GB of storage. The PC Health Check app from Microsoft tells you whether a PC qualifies.

Some PCs fail the check only because TPM or Secure Boot is switched off in the firmware settings. We can turn these on safely, which sometimes needs the drive converting first. There are ways to force Windows 11 onto unsupported PCs, but Microsoft says such machines may not get updates, so we do not recommend it for a computer you rely on.

Your options if you are still on Windows 10

  • Upgrade in place: if the PC qualifies, we upgrade it and keep your files, programs and settings, after a backup.
  • Upgrade the hardware: an SSD and more memory can make a qualifying but slow PC feel like a new one.
  • Extended Security Updates: for home PCs that cannot upgrade yet, enrolling buys time until October 2027. We can help you enrol.
  • Replace: if the PC is old and unsupported, a new or refurbished Windows 11 machine, with everything moved across.
  • A different system: an old laptop used mainly for the web can sometimes be given a new life with ChromeOS Flex.

Businesses still on Windows 10

Business PCs are not covered by the home ESU scheme; Microsoft sells commercial Extended Security Updates separately. Unsupported machines on a business network are a real cyber security risk, and can be a problem for insurance and Cyber Essentials. We can audit which machines can upgrade, plan the work around your opening hours and replace the rest.

Why is my PC so slow?

An old hard drive

The single most common cause. If your PC takes minutes to start and the drive light stays on, it probably has a spinning hard drive. Replacing it with an SSD, and copying everything across, is the best value upgrade there is.

Not enough memory

4GB is not enough for Windows 11 and a modern web browser. 8GB is the practical minimum, and 16GB is comfortable. Some laptops have soldered memory, so we check first.

A full drive and too much starting up

Small drives fill up with updates, downloads and photos. Programs that start with Windows, trial software from the shop, and several security programs fighting each other all slow things down.

Heat and dust

A laptop that slows down after a few minutes and blows hot air may be overheating. A clean and fresh thermal paste brings the speed back.

Something unwanted

Adware and browser hijackers slow PCs and fill the screen with adverts. If that sounds familiar, see our virus removal help.

What a speed-up includes

We back up your files, check the drive's health and the temperatures, remove what you do not need, sort out start-up programs and updates, and check for anything unwanted. If an upgrade would help, we explain what it is and what difference it will make before fitting it. We agree the outcome and the price before we start.

Windows 11 upgrades and slow PCs: your questions

Is my Windows 10 PC still safe to use?+

Windows 10 no longer gets security updates unless the PC is enrolled in Extended Security Updates. It still works, but it becomes riskier over time, especially for email and banking. Plan to upgrade or replace it.

Will I lose my files upgrading to Windows 11?+

An in-place upgrade keeps your files and programs. We still back everything up first, because that is the sensible thing to do before any big change.

How do I check if my PC can run Windows 11?+

Run Microsoft's PC Health Check app, or look in Settings, Windows Update. If it says no, ask us: sometimes it is just a setting.

Is an SSD upgrade worth it?+

For a PC with an old hard drive, almost always. It is the biggest speed improvement most machines can get.

Can you upgrade my PC remotely?+

Software upgrades on a qualifying PC often can be done over a secure remote session, which starts with a £25 deposit. Hardware upgrades need the machine in our workshop.
